Bringing Africans together

Canada Day long weekend was packed with fun activities for Africans in Edmonton. The beautiful weather got people out and mingling at BBQs, the annual All African Soccer Tournament, and at the Basketmouth show.

I love playing and watching football. I look forward to the annual All African Soccer Tournament every summer and I’ve attended at least one game for the past 3 and a half years I’ve lived in this city. The Africa Centre hosts the three-day event that brings together more than 15 teams representing different African communities in Edmonton. The tournament’s been a great opportunity to be around fellow Africans. All African Soccer Tournament Edmonton

The Basketmouth show was another event that drew a diverse crowd of Africans and non-Africans alike. The show was hosted by Rex Entertainment and LZ Entertainment. The Nigerian comedian had everyone laughing so hard, nearly rolling on the floor. Working the event this time wasn’t so bad because I actually got to watch a good chunk of the show. And since it was a show instead of the usual parties, you could hear the comedian no matter where you were in the building. I had to control myself from lol while talking to guests to make sure everything was OK at their tables or while serving trays of food. From the young to the old-er, it was a good mix of people from different parts of Africa and from outside of that continent. And that’s what Rex Entertainment and LZ entertainment are all about – bringing people together with their shows.

The city is very spread out that sometimes it’s hard to believe there’s even a decent number of African folks here. I’m still surprised when I go to events sometimes, thinking to myself “wow, there’re these many African/black people in Edmonton?”. Major events like Cariwest, Heritage Festival, the annual football tournaments and events held by Rex and LZ Entertainment bring people out of the woodwork—and it’s always nice to see.

I can’t wait to have another “wow, there’re these many African/black people in Edmonton?” moment at any community events—or the next event by Rex Entertainment and LZ Entertainment.
