My winter hair: protective hairstyle for naturalistas

It’s that time of year again— the season of negative-double-digit-degree-Celsius has begun. Coincidentally, we had our first snowfall today here in Edmonton. Luckily the temperature is only -7 degrees Celsius. The temperature is going to get worse and I have a 4b/c type of hair that doesn’t do so well in that kind of weather. So I’m going back to the best winter/protective hairstyle I know—single braids/twists with extensions.

It’s been about a year and a half since I’ve done this hairstyle. Normally, I leave out my natural hair from spring through summer. And wear different single braid styles with extensions from fall throughout winter. I normally keep each style for about two months and I still shampoo and condition my hair as I normally would. This has been my go to routine for many years. Last year was the first time I wore my natural hair through the winter months—and my hair suffered a bit with breakage.

I’m excited to get back into this old routine. I did my first single braids for the cold winter season two weekends ago and it’s been fun styling it for work and leisure. Not only does this style protect my hair from the harsh winter months, it saves me a lot of time because it’s low maintenance.

Happy braiding!
