2014 FIFA World Cup anthem totally disappoints

I love football, period—so much that one of the saddest things about getting old is knowing that one day, I won’t be able to kick a ball around. But I know the passion will always be there, tucked away quietly.

Football is the one sport that unites the global village like no other. I was super pumped for the 2014 FIFA World Cup games to kickoff in Brasil next month—until I saw the theme song last week. The song (choice of artists included) was a total #KillJoy and ruined my week. I’m not a fan of Pitbull (extreme #BubbleGumMusic), JLo is OK (borderline #BubbleGumMusic), and I don’t know who Claudia Leitte is (so #NoJudgment). I understand the need to appeal to a wider demographic, I just wish FIFA had chosen a much better artist.

For me, Nelly Furtado’s Forca still takes the cake as the best international football anthem. The lyrics to that song resonate and move me—it’s the energetic song that really conveys how much I love football.

Oh FIFA, why?
