Discovering the little gems in Edmonton #8 – FC Edmonton

Discovering the little gems in Edmonton #8 – FC Edmonton

If you’ve read my posts on this blog, you already know that I’m a big fan of all things football. I enjoy playing the sport as much as I love watching it, whether I’m cozied up in bed til late Saturday or Sunday mornings watching the English Premier League or enjoying a sunny weather from the sideline while cheering for my friends play in EDSA and local tournaments. But one thing I haven’t done since I moved to Edmonton is watch our local professional footballers play. I’ve been meaning to, but here we are, four years later. So this season, I’m making it a priority to go to an FC Edmonton game as part of my New Year resolution to try at least one new thing in Edmonton every month, something I’ve never done before—no matter how big or small.

So in May, we finally made it to an FC Edmonton game when they duked it out with Atlanta Silverbacks at Clarke Stadium. The game was great, just because I love to be around that collective energy and enthusiasm for football. And the fact that the weather cooperated was a huge bonus. Performance-wise, I thought our team was just OK. I had higher expectations for a professional team like FC Edmonton, I’ve seen EDSA teams play better. One thing that impressed me was the heading, both teams did that very well. But the agility, swiftness and ball control that I love to see in footballers just weren’t there.  Sadly, we lost 2-1.

My first impression of FC Edmonton was disappointing. But will I buy a ticket for another game and cheer the team on loudly like an out of control soccer mom? Hell YEAH!
